Abstract
In 2011, as Slovenia celebrates the 20th anniversary of its independence, it is again confronted with many challenges. These have arisen quite unexpectedly. Many were truly convinced that with EU membership Slovenia had reached the necessary level of stability and, most importantly, left behind the volatile, fragile and even explosive Balkans. Yet with the emergence of the financial crisis that has soon developed into a comprehensive economic downturn, both Slovenia and the EU have found themselves in a very serious economic and political situation. This contribution analyses the reasons for the present crisis and points to some possible solutions.
